Frankfurt an der Oder

The city that arose on the site of the Franconian settlement has existed since the 13th century. In 1430, Frankfurt an der Oder joined the Hanseatic League. According to the results of World War II, it was divided by the Oder River, the territory on the other side became Polish. Before the unification of Germany, Frankfurt belonged to the GDR.

Frankfurt an Oder (Frankfort an de Oder) is a small city in East Germany, which is not one of the famous German tourist centers. In the postwar years, this city had to be restored from ruins. There are almost no old houses here, the basis of architecture is modern buildings.

Frankfurt an der Oder is a border town. To get from Germany to neighboring Poland, just go through the 200-meter bridge. The city belongs to the federal state of Brandenburg. Berlin is about 80 km away.

Before the unification of Germany, Frankfurt an der Oder belonged to the GDR.

Sights

A number of architectural monuments are still preserved here. Remained the Gothic church of St. Mary (Marienkirche), built in the XIII century and rebuilt after the war.

The City Hall of Frankfurt an der Oder survived the war. In this brick Gothic building with three openwork "roses" on the facade today is a gallery of modern painting.

Friedenskirche

The Protestant temple Friedenskirche (the former church of St. Nicholas), founded in the 13th century, was established.

The neo-Gothic postal building (restored after the war) has been preserved.

Viadrina European University is a monumental building with an antique portal. This educational institution exists since 1506. In 1811, it was closed and only began to function again since 1991. The three faculties of Viadrina European University are studying German and Polish students.

One of the most unusual sights of the city is the "three-dimensional" house. The facade of the building is decorated with an optical illusion - a reliable image of another house with a graceful bay window and a base made of rough stone.

The historic Frankfurt an der Oder houses are located in the city center. It is better to start the walk from the central square - there stands the tallest building - the Oderturm skyscraper. The historic center is cozy, there are pedestrian areas, a cafe and a bistro.

Lennépark

A Botanical Garden has been created in the city, several public parks have been arranged, among them there are old ones - Lennépark, Stadtwald Forest Park.

Since 2000, the Wildlife Park has been opened - a quiet conservation area on 16 hectares, where several species of artiodactyls, wild horses and donkeys, squirrels, guinea fowls, various birds live freely.

In the evenings, the Kameya night club opens, café-bars and several casinos are open. In the daytime, in addition to walking around the historic center, you can make excursions to the nearby town of Neuzelle or Polish Slubice.

Where to eat

Cafe Frankfurter Kartoffelhaus is known for its signature apple pies and cider. Restaurant "Nirvana" pleases with Indian cuisine - here you can take an inexpensive Indian-style dinner for a company of several people, order hot dishes on the grill.

Shopping

In the center of Frankfurt an der Oder, there are antique shops, stalls and galleries, and second-hand shops. A successful trip to shopping centers with low prices can be made in neighboring Slubice.
